  I thought that a small store downtown can't compete with department stores because large stores can keep more in stock so that you have more variety. I was way off. There's something about being greeted at the door by Dan, owner of the store, day after day that is welcoming. Even more than that, Dan is not some high school student working there for gas money. In fact, he makes furniture by hand so he knows a good piece from a bad one. If you ask him what type of wood a table is made of, he'll know. And, he'll know if that is a good wood or not. I was going to buy a dark coffee table but he offered the information that Ashley, who made the table, used a light cherry wood and a black stain. That apparently means that any mark on the table will turn white and stand out. Dan is also willing to order anything from his catalogs. He has access to any furniture found at Ashely, Best Craft, and a few others. And, if you don't find exactly what you want, he'll make it himself!
